The Academy serves as the FIP's primary educational arm which wil regularly bring together those engaged in the education of podiatirsts throughout the world. This could include faculty, both clinical and basic science, researchers, cirriculum developers, assessors, administrators, and students. The Academy will provide them with an external source of reference and guidance and keep them informed of developments in the podiatric medical education community throughout the world.

“The primary purpose of the Academy,” according to Dr. Vince Hetherington, Academy President, “is the enhancement of podiatric medical education worldwide. The Academy will do all it can to strengthen podiatric education whether in countries with a large number of podiatrists or in those with smaller numbers. It is our hope that the Academy will stimulate growth in podiatric programs while strengthening the teaching skills of faculty worldwide."

The Academy is currently developing the educational program for the 2013 World Congress of Podiatry in Rome, Italy. The event will take place from October 17-19, 2013. The program will include 3 plenary sessions and 6 daily wokshops. The Academy will work with national organizations to assist were possible in securing CME/CPD credits. 

On July 28, 2009 in Toronto, Canada, Delegates at the Annual General Meeting of the Federation Internationale des Podologues/ International Federation of Podiatirsts the International Academy of Podiatric Medical Educators appointed its first Governing Council. It consisted of 8 educators from 6 continents

Podiatric educators attended the XX World Congress of Podiatry held on May 14, 2010 in Amsterdam. At this Congress, the Academy of Podiatric Medical Educators was launched.
